Mirelle Guiliano spent some time in the United States as an exchange student when she was a teenager and returned home with poor eating habits and an inflated waistline. With the help of a family friend, “Dr. Miracle,” she was able to transform both and retrain herself to the French way of maintaining a healthy body, shape, and lifestyle. To identify problem areas, Mirelle kept a food diary/journal, which she discussed with her doctor. Then she learned to wean herself off of these foods (for several months), recalibrating her system, then adding them back in moderation. The French way allows one to eat whatever you want, but in moderation, with some foods viewed as indulgences (eaten in small quantities). French women do not tend to snack between meals, and eat a variety of delicious things in small portions. In addition, they get lots of exercise in the course of a normal day by walking everywhere, taking the stairs, and incorporating activity into their daily routine (this does not mean joining a gym).

Mirelle Guiliano’s refreshing book reads more like a collection of stories and recipes than it does a dieting book. She does include a bulleted list at the very end for those readers who want to see her method distilled into the basics/steps. She and the French aren’t really doing/advocating anything new – eating in moderation is a tried and true dieting technique – but the things she describes eating will have readers reaching for fresh in-season ingredients and experimenting with new recipes and cooking techniques. I think if we (Americans) loved food and drink the way the French do, we’d be a lot healthier. This was by far the most delightful dieting book I’ve ever read.
