Dreamy fairytale-like fable. Beautiful limpid prose even in translation. Refreshingly free of modernist artifice. Its writing like this that keeps me reading. If you can help it, wait until after you read this book before you read the author's bio. Mishima was truly sui generis. Thinking of the author and what the story might have meant to him can make an innocent and charming love story seem like something altogether different. At times I had to struggle to avoid thinking of the story as an allegory so as to stay under the writing's enchantment.
