Thompson knows how to pull at your emotions and make you think about what is important in life. So much was looked at this book: Loss, regret, heartbreak, friendship and healing... I can't say I absolutely love this story, but it is sad and sweet and full of heartbreak and love. I think it is one that will probably grow on me as I reflect upon it (which I am finding even now as I write this review). As to the illustrations. I am in awe of Thompson because each novel I've read of his carries a different look. I love this fact. The animals in this book, such as Chunky Rice and Dandel, are darlingly illustrated while the humans tend to be a bit scarey to me, but...it all works.
