I enjoyed this novel for the simple fact that I couldn't quite figure out who was responsible for the murder that Inspector Rebus was investigating until the very end. I had my suspicions, but there was a large shady group of suspects that I had my finger pointed at most of the time. In the end, some of the member of said shady group turned out to be part of the guilty party, but not all of them so I was quite happy with Rankin's writing being able to keep me off balanced. I also felt like I was starting to get to know John Rebus a little better, and in particular his faults which seemed many by the time all was said and done.
