I have to review this on my shelves because THIS COVER IS SO MISLEADING I CANT EVEN STAND IT IM SO MAD!!!!!
So, I do NOT like the really frothy romantic comedy-type chick-lit books, and that's why I feel like my rating does not represent this book well, but I feel like the publisher is being PAID TO SELL A BOOK to the CORRECT AUDIENCE and this cover implies:
-Badass chick
-Edgy world
-There might be fire or crap blowing up in the background
RIGHT?!
NONE OF THESE IS TRUE!!
I don't even know how to rate this book because it's just not my cup of tea. I think if you likelighthearted stuff you may be into this. There is certainly a really big audience for this type of book, I feel sad for the author that she will never reach it with this kind of marketing.

Sometimes a cover is all it takes to tank a book...

Darn. I thought this was urban fantasy and as you described-- bad ass & edgy. Sounds like it's really paranormal romance. And not my cup of tea, either.
This is how I feel about Patricia Briggs' "Mercedes Thompson" books. The covers bear no relation to the books! She's a friend of my gf's family and she apparently doesn't like to talk about the cover art. Also, is it just me, or is it weird that for some reason fantasy chick-lit (no matter how sex-less) has sultry looking women in various states of undress? Generally speaking, no man would ever buy something with these covers; I was ashamed to even borrow my gf's copies of the Mercedes Thompson books.
Ian, I kind of felt the same way about the first Mercy Thompson book. I met one of Patricia Briggs' friends at a party at WorldCon last year, didn't really get to discuss it with her, but she did mention that Briggs' other ideas for the story kind of clash with the image being sold on the covers. They're definitely not as...I don't know, "stripper mechanic" as the covers imply.
As one of the people who likes the light hearted fluffy stuff I can tell you that you're right; I would never pick up this book based on its cover.
There's a certain level of bemusement at the fact that something that missed the mark so badly that it made you rant here wound up getting a 3 star review. I mean - your review, you choose, but the number of stars doesn't feel like it reflects your written opinion....
The only problem I had with the Mercy Thompson Books was that she only has 1 tattoo not all the extra's shown in the covers.
Well, I, for one, don't touch any book with a cover like that. Because I kind of expect it to follow "the contract" (the tacit agreement of what I will get as audience). If the cover doesn't reflect the story, it's some serious bad marketing.
Whatever, the cover pretty well shows Mercy, Indian chick with an attitude. Guess we will just have to agree to disagree.
I was thinking about buying this book because I'm a huge fun of the Dresden file an that type of writing but not realy sure if this fits that style?
