A wonderful mosaic of characters come together one fateful late night and all matter of tragedy and suffering is explored in the meantime, from the overlooked aspects of personal tragedies to a quest to fully research and understand the scope, scale, and breadth of atrocities and horrors in all human history (past, present, and future): "I want to produce a graph—a single graph to establish, to summarize, the relationship between history and atrocity. To chart whether horror has been increasing or decreasing century after century. Or else, to find out if there's been a constant amount throughout recorded time" (44).

An incredible book by a young Portugese author I was not familiar with until Chad Post recommended it to me. Jose Saramago is a huge fan of Tavares, and it's easy to see why. A readable, breathtaking work. I will definitely be checking out more books from him in the future.
