** spoiler alert ** Mattie Breen has moved around a lot. One of her mother's favorite saying is, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." And that is pretty much what happens every time in Mattie's life. Mattie is shy, painfully so. Now that she and her mother have moved in with her Uncle Potluck, who is the school custodian, Mattie has a plan. In order to avoid recess and lunch and any time that is devoted to solely to socialization Mattie is going to be her Uncle Potluck's custodial apprentice. First, she has to persuade Uncle Potluck. All is going well until Mattie tries a little too hard and locks herself in the principals office while putting on new doorknobs and Uncle Potluck trips and his bum knee that was going to be replaced at Christmas all of the sudden has to be done now. Throw in the possibility of a new friendship with the niece of the neighbor next door and you have a story that will resound with many readers.
