** spoiler alert ** I listened to this book on CD and found it really interesting. It's only the 2nd book I've ready by Michael Connelly, but I think I'll check out more as I really seem to enjoy them.

This book revolves around Harry Bosch, an LA detective who has been assigned a murder case involving the owner of Fortune Liquors. The case appears to be a straight forward triad murder in an Asian community, but of course, looks are always deceiving.

As Harry is investigating the murder, he receives a video from his daughter in Hong Kong (she is living there with her mother). It appears as though she has been abducted and Harry believes her abduction and the murder case are intertwined. As a result, Harry boards a plane to Hong Kong to find his daughter immediately.

Once landing in Hong Kong, Harry, his ex-wife, and her boyfriend somehow piece together tiny clues to get close to his daughter. While they are crazily looking for his daughter, he keeps tabs on the case back in LA and the pieces never really fell into place. Harry was always having a tough time figuring out how these two situations were exactly related.

Of course, by the time the book ends, we know that the stories really were not related-- his daughter cooked up an elaborate scheme to get her father to come to Hong Kong and take her back to the US-- but that plan went terribly wrong when her "abductor/ friend" ended up really abducting her to try to sell her organs on the black market. And the liquor store owner was not murdered by a triad gang member but rather set up by his own children to get out of the liquor business.

I knew that Connelly would have some twists in the book, but I wasn't prepared for the owner's kids to be the guilty party. I'm also realizing that Connelly isn't afraid to kill off his characters. I was surprised when his ex-wife was fatally wounded during the pursuit of their daughter and I was equally surprised (and more than a bit disappointed) when he found his partner (and father of three small children) dead on the floor of the liquor store on the day of the arrest.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun, quick-paced read that made me want to reach for another Connelly book. But the next one I think I'll avoid getting so attached to the characters--afterall, they might get killed of at any moment.
