Good debut book. The action happens right away and keeps the reader engaged. You really feel for the characters and wonder what you would do in that situation.

While on the way to school two buses are stuck in a horrific hailstorm that causes mass destruction and death. The 14 surviving kids take shelter in a Greenway (think Super Walmart)and soon learn that it was more than just a freak hailstorm in Colorado. A volcano has erupted on an island called La Palma. It was so massive that the entire island was destroyed sending five hundred billion tons of rock and lava into the ocean. This created a mega-tsunami that moved six hundred miles per hour. It took out most of the Eastern coast in an instant.

8.2 earthquakes ripped through the land and massive weather events occurred. As a result of these storms, a top-secret defense building was damaged and let loose bio-chemicals that change people due to blood types. Type A get severe blisters that will cause a person to bleed to death. Type AB suffer paranoid delusions and hallucinations. Type B seem to be unaffected although they may loose the ability to reproduce. Type O, the most common blood type, become deranged and violent.

Stuck inside the store as society falls apart, the kids must learn to band together and fend for themselves. Some excel at this and some give up hope and give up. Are there any survivors who will help them or will they spend the rest of their lives living in the aisles of the Greenway?

Possible pitfalls for book talks: teen drinking and drug use, reference to teen sex. Only light cursing the F-word is F***.
