I remember that this was quite elegantly written, with enough neatly turned phrases to carry me through to the end at a fast pace. And yet when I finished, I found myself rather disgruntled: not only was the ending not half so shocking as I'm sure Martel intended for it to be, but the message of the entire book was one I did not agree with. The discussion of religion was both facile and condescending: I'm a lifelong atheist, but I certainly don't think that belief and reason are incompatible. Readable, particularly for some of the more imaginative parts, but certainly not worth the hype.
