Chris Cleave does it again - he gives us brilliant portrayals of Zoe, Jack and Kate, friends, lovers, and competitors at the brutal levels of Olympic competitions, along with endearing pictures of Sophie, the eight year old daughter of Jack and Kate who has leukemia and Tom who is the coach of Zoe and Kate. Their lives intersect at crucial moments in time and each of the main characters confronts what it means to win and lose. Cleave, as in Little Bee, does an exceptional job when he writes in the voice of children, switching easily from one voice to another without jarring the continuity of the whole in the least. Gold is a thrilling "ride" - pun intended. It is a look inside the psychology, emotional and physical efforts it takes to compete at Olympic levels and the rewards and demons winning and losing brings. What does it mean, really, to win or lose by one tenth or one one thousandth of a second? What does it cost to go for Gold?
