Imagine New York City as the center of US food production. It sounds incredible but the city was once home to farms, distilleries, breweries and more. In the mid to late 1800s, NYC was a city that produced what it ate. That is no longer true but there is a new generation of rockstar butchers, diehard farmers, and mildly manic beekeepers bringing real food back to a city where great food is cooked but not generally produced. Shulman's ability to tell a story and to really connect with individuals makes this book come alive. Full review over on Pursuitist.
