Effortless, simple, direct, like the girl with the pearl earring herself, but I understand, as with the Vermeer's works, there was a dedicated researcher and a vivid imagination behind this delightful period piece. Told in the first person, I enjoyed the techniques used by the author to reveal and restrain, simultaneously, a cautious girl finding her way in a unknown world of a family struggling, not for survival like her own, but under the weight of their own social constructions. I have not seen the movie, but anticipate viewing the sights and sounds of Delft, Netherlands in the 1660's.
