really liked it
bookshelves: classics
Read from July 23 to September 11, 2012

I just loved most of the stories, especially 'The Last Good Country', 'Big Two-Hearted River' and 'An Alpine Idyll'. Funny how I've gave 'A Farewell to Arms' 4 stars instead of 5 mainly because of, as I'd thought, too many unnecessary details, but now I was feasting my eyes at the description of Nick fishing for about 20 pages! The emotional part of the stories is also good, especially Nick's break up with Margery in 'The End of Something' an 'Three-Day Blow'.

However, there were stories which left me baffled - may be because they aren't finished (like 'The Wedding Day', which looks too short), or may be I just can't grasp Hemingway's ideas in them.

At the end of the book I realised that I just want more of the characters. We know a lot about Nick and some of his friends like Bill, but I really wish to learn more about Nick's sister, or his wife Helen, whom we can see only once, and his son, and so on.
