** spoiler alert ** This book was our selection for our November book club meeting. When I first looked up a summary, it sounded like something I would like to read: a woman escapes from the Russian pogroms, makes her way to America and a new life, and then finds out her daughter might still be alive, which causes her to make the trek back to search for her.

The first 80 pages hooked me in, and I found them interesting for the most part, even suspending my disbelief for a little (about her involvement with both Bursteins). Then the novel becomes a train wreck. Lillian, the protagonist, gets into many improbable situations.

Gumdrop and her pimp cousin? The story arc at the end with John? Give me a break!

I kept reading, hoping that it would redeem itself, but it really didn't.

I generally don't give one star reviews. I try to find something good about every book that I read, but not this one.
