The writing in this book was TERRIBLE. It was like a middle school kid wrote it. The writing was a little jumpy and not very descriptive. The writing was just.... gosh, it was bad. However, the storyline itself wasn't too shabby. It's the only thing that kept me reading this book.

This was my first Pern novel and I've learned not to read anything written by Anne McCaffrey's son. I've yet to read anything by Anne, but I'm not going to let her son's terrible writing sway me from her. If she really is a good writer, then clearly her son is riding on her coat tails.

If you really love Pern, then I would suggest this novel to you but if you're not a die hard fan, the writing will probably turn you off pretty quick. It's not unreadable and it's a quick read if you want something simple for a trip or time off. I don't think I'll be reading the next book in this series...

Crystal Starr Light It's a shame McCaffrey's son had to ride off his mother's series to have a writing career. I feel like Carol Higgins Clark did that with her mother, Mary.

I hope if you do read the other Pern books, they are better than this one was!

Charity I hope I like the others better too! From what I've seen in reviews for Anne, they mostly seem positive. I'm just on a long waiting list for her first book at the library. Meanwhile, I'm reading Star Wars books. Woo! :D

Crystal Starr Light I've been meaning to read her first books too! There are just so many good books to read :)

Susan Medsker-Nedderman This wasn't written by Anne alone. Her son, Todd, had a lot to do with it. Read the earliest published books, written by Anne alone, and they are excellent. Unfortunately, Todd doesn't have his mother's gift.

Charity I knew this book was written by her son. I don't think she had anything to do with this book at all, which is why I'm still planning on her reading her books. I just haven't gotten around to reading them yet but think you for validating my hope that she's a MUCH better writer than her son! :)
