I was forced to give First Test four stars instead of its rightful five, just because this second book in the series is even better but five stars is the highest rating I can give.

Page continues soon after where First Test left off. Keladry has passed her probationary year and become a proper page, and continues her habit of picking up strays. From stray first-years that she saves from bullies to a stray dog that she rescues from death, she continues to demonstrate why this series is called Protector of the Small.

She faces many more challenges this year, dealing with increasingly difficult training, more bullying, and growing up, all while a war is brewing in the background. She remains the levelheaded protagonist that breaks tropes and cliches and never acts quick how you would expect. She may not be quite so alone, having made several friends over the past year, but she still has to rely on her own wits to make it through three years of hellish training, culminating in a moment when she must choose between her future or the life of one of her many charges. She faces her deepest fears, and has to conquer them.

She is forced to deal with growing up as a girl surrounded by boys, and the various awkward problems this causes, as well as facing the same bullies that tormented her during her first year, spider monsters like the one she failed to beat at the beginning of the first book, and a training master who has his life set on making the pages' lives miserable, to prepare them to serve as knights in the war looming on the horizon.
