It took me a while to realise that this book is really about Dorothy, rather than the rest of the family. I thought it was also about the on/off relationship she had with her almost-brother Daniel, but that is only a part of the bigger picture of her life. And this is a very Kiwi life in the early part of the book, with lots of resonance for Kiwi readers.
Not exactly un-putdownable, but a brilliant example of an "ordinary" life, told chronologically. My only gripe was that I couldn't keep up with who was who towards the end when the new generations kept appearing.
