what a book! completely engrossing with wonderful intrigue and characterization. at times japanese culture was exoticized a bit too much for my taste, and there was a frankly unrealistic (but highly engaging) amount of sex, but overall it's easy to see why this is one of the most successful historical novels of all time. i shall remember blackthorn, toranaga, and most especially mariko for a very very long time...

Heather The thing I love most about this book is that by the time you finish it, you feel like you can actually speak Japanese.

Blake Charlton :-)

Eduardo Haha, so true. I actually learned basic japanese in a moment of boredom after reading that book. You should read the other books in that series too, they're all pretty good. Especially Gaijin and Noble House.

Blake Charlton Sheeesh, does everyone but me finish this book knowing Japanese?
