I really enjoyed this book. I picked it up because I read a review comparing Keesey to Willa Cather, and Cather is one of my favs.
The writing is beautiful--clear and often poetic--and Esther, whose point of view is most often the storyteller's lens, is an insightful character.
The reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is that it takes a while for the plot to pick up. I was enjoying the book though not terribly engaged (it was easy to set down) for the first half, and then BAM! I couldn't stop reading.
I particularly liked the historical aspects of the novels. It plays out one of my favorite folk music themes: The railroad as the root of all evil.
Overall, I recommend it!
