This is an excellent read. It disappoints only in comparison to the author's previous collections of short stories, "Interpreter of Maladies" which was indeed extraordinary.
"The Namesake" is the story of the first born American generation of immigrants from India. The interplay between the old culture, the rebelliousness of youth, and the finding life connections is very well done. The characterizations and descriptions are compelling. You can really feel yourself in these people's lives and being surprised, along with them, at the many twists and turns. Ultimately, it is a story of the process of growing up and discovery, which all people can relate to.

Casaconnors I really liked this book. An even better book by this author is called "interpreter of maladies" it's a collection of short stories. I thought it was great.

Caroline I agree -- Interpreter of Maladies was excellent.
