YOu may have troubel with this one if you're not a sci-fi geek. Or didn't grow up as a sci-fi geek. The allusions to the sci-fi and fantasy cannon fly thick and furious. I loved it, of course, but caveat emptor. All in all this was a great a read, but I had some trouble with the misogyny. Maybe I overstate, though. It's not precisely misogyny, but perhaps an objectification of women that, in the text, works to exemplify or signify the objectification and machisimo of Dominican culture. However, I couldn't really tell if it was a comment on his society, or simply the only way the athor knows how to deal with women.

In the end Oscar was not, for me, a sympathetic character. He was mostly annoying. A victim. That sai I enjoy books that don't give in to the pat ending where all is good and happy in the world and the characters all change for the best. Here, the author tries to show the simple fact of "nothing ever ends."
