I enjoy Colson Whitehead's writing quite a bit - especially "John Henry Days" and "The Intuitionist". This one didn't work quite as well as the others. His writing style is brilliant and engaging and he captured teenage adolescent angst beautifully and accurately. I too remember the anxiety of "who will buy the beer" and teenage crushes. However, he only gave us glimpses of the tension underneath - it was clearly there, I just wanted to see some more of it.
