** spoiler alert ** Lexi has just about everything going for her as she prepares for her sophomore year. She and her best friend Taylor are as tight as ever, she's dating handsome and well-mannered Ryan, and she is drop-dead gorgeous. That is until the night everything changes. At a party, she is betrayed by Taylor and Ryan, and is injured in a car wreck while fending off advances from Taylor's older brother. She awakens to facial disfigurement and surgery to erase as much of the damage as possible. But this is a different Lexi, filled with anger toward everyone around her and afraid to face the world as less than beautiful. The premise of the book revolves around Lexi coming to terms with herself now that the thing she and others have used to defined her has changed. The anger, jealousy, and desire for revenge she experiences are described in a very real fashion, and the author does a fine job of building sympathy for Lexi while also providing scenes of her behaving very badly, actions that are to be expected, given the circumstances. Teen girls and guys who define themselves merely through their appearances will certainly want to give this one a try since the Lexi who evolves over the course of the book has so much more depth than the Lexi before the accident. This is a good example of being given lemons and making lemondade and using a tragic event to move a life in a different direction. There is much to discuss and ponder in this title. The characters are complex and not as easy to peg as readers might think on first glance. For instance, Taylor is much more than she seems as is Ryan, Lexi's somewhat clueless boyfriend.
