This was possibly the strangest, most hypnotic book I've ever read! It strangely kept pulling me in as I had to get to the end to see what happened at the end. Ariel's best friend, Jeni, disappeared on a trip to visit a college. Ariel's guilt is eating at her body and mind because she was supposed to be on the trip also. As Ariel leaves for her first year of college (the one where her friend disappeared) her parents tell her that her Mom has cancer. The story is of Ariel's quest to find out what happened to Jeni and how she can help her mother to heal. She meets some very odd characters on her journey. Block has some of the best descriptive words in her writing that I've come across lately. They suck you in to the book and keep you interested until the very end.
