I have a weird fixation with Neal Stephenson. I literally cannot stop reading his books, even though they're sort of not that good. At least not in the way that books I think are good are usually good. Sort of this weird, not-quite-Eco thing. Anyway, this book, more than it's about weird science, or about the history of western philosophy - it's about a way of imagining the role of history in society, and understanding that society is constantly changing, slowly, and if you wait long enough, almost anything can happen. The parts of this book that are about the waiting were, to me, much more interesting than the parts where the thing that is waited for happens.
