I love a good cozy mystery, and this was right up my alley. Set in the late Victorian era, this story features a displaced Indian princess (called 'Mink') who must move to the Queen's 'grace-and-favor' housing after her father, the deposed Maharaja dies bankrupt. There's scandal, and intrigue (both high and low), and a devilish poisoning which puts Mink's devoted maid Pooki right in the hot seat. Mink turns sleuth to catch the killer and save her servant.

The writing was crisp and fluid, the characters memorable, and the entire story was quite charming. If there were one or two points where modern-sounding turns of phrase took me out of the story, what of that? It's well worth the read if you're an old-fashioned mystery lover.
