I really enjoyed reading this book, mostly because of Hawthorne's amazing characters. He does such an awesome job. Hepzibah's perpetual scowl, Penelope's sunny disposition, Clifford's child-like state... when I'm reading Hawthorne I can actually drum up a pretty good image of all the characters, which I find hard with some authors. The reason the book didn't score higher with me was because I kinda felt that it was anti-climatic. I kept expecting something more mysterious and "Ta-Duh"...and nope. The plot was still intriguing, and it moved me through--I DID enjoy it...I was just expecting...something different.
