I have a slightly schizophrenic reaction to this novel. Though I think Sarah Waters did an excellent job of creating vivid characters and detailing their complex emotional and sexual lives, I really didn't enjoy delving into the psyches of any of the people she created. Her depiction of a particularly cringe-inducing male character was so good that I simply wanted to get past the episodes in which he "starred" as quickly as possible. The abused girlfriend who was inexplicably stuck on him induced nothing but irritation with her ghastly lack of self esteem and poor judge of character.
I'm a fan of wartime novels and diaries and Waters excelled in her depiction of the quotidian details of life in 1940s London.
