You know how I just posted my review of At Last yesterday and I was all 'totally looking forward to Forever and a Day y'all'? (okay, maybe I didn't actually write it, but I was thinking it). Well, see, I'd requested it from NetGalley about two weeks ago, but I had little hope of being approved because Grand Central Publishing NEVER EVER approves me. It's funny because I'd get ARCs from them all the time at Borders, but on NetGalley? Bupkus. Such is the life of an ex-bookseller turned libary-person. Anyways, a miracle happened and I got approved. Of course I immediately downloaded it because when you work for an academic library, things are a tad slow during the summer.
This book totally rocked. Grace was gently snarky and Josh was wonderfully conflicted. The book's theme was 'parental expectations' and the interesting part was that, aside from a single phone call, there were no parents. Josh's parents had died in the same accident that paralyzed his sister and Grace's parents were still on the East Coast. So it was really more about how Grace and Josh perceived their parents rather than any actual pressure.
I also enjoyed how Josh wrestled with the divide between what he wanted for his patients & his career, and what he wanted for his family. I honestly wasn't sure which way he was going to lean about the professional decision. The characters were a big part of why I enjoyed the book so much. Toby was adorable and I could picture Tank precisely. I felt for Anna and I smiled every time someone shoved a shoebox at Grace. There were also brief cameos by Chloe and Sawyer, the couple from Head Over Heels. The bro-mances between Ty, Matt, and Josh were seen.
There were some of the same problems that afflicted At Last, namely the fifty-million events crammed within 258 pages. There was a lot to keep track of and not everything was fully done justice, like Toby's desire for a mom. After six books, the supporting characters are also quite numerous. Sometimes I feel like I'm reading about what was happening off-screen in Stars Hollow on Gilmore Girls.
I do recommend this one if you want a beach read and again, I feel any of these books will work fairly well as stand-alones, if you don't mind missing out on a few jokes.
