JQ has done it again! As let down as I was by Marcus and Honoria's story last spring, I have to admit that I picked this book up gingerly when it came out at the end of May. Don't get me wrong now; I love JQ to the bottom of my heart and would never NOT pick up one of her books. I just didn't know what to think because Marcus and Honoria were not very inspiring.

Thankfully, the devoted fan in me was quite inspired by Daniel and Anne's story, to the point that I have recently added Annelise to the list of girl names for my hypothetical children! But I digress...

Daniel is the only male in a host of female Smythe-Smith characters, that alone leading to a well-deep pity and the sincere hope he has invested in a good pair of ear plugs. From the prelude, it was very evident to me that Daniel was the irresistible mix of Colin, Gregory, and Benedict Bridgerton. He had the charming devil-may-care attitude of Colin, the sweet admiring tendencies of Benedict and Gregory's perseverance. I mean, how could it get any better?

In walks Anne (previously known as Annelise Shawcross) with her dramatic good looks, faintly haunted aura, and Hyacinth-sharp wit. The dialogue, as usual, was incomparable as I laughed my way through the scenes. I felt instantly drawn to Anne and Daniel's love and was moved to hours-long reading bouts as I cheered them through carriage accidents and really terrible play enactments.

Add the hilarious trio of young Smythe-Smiths (Frances, Elizabeth, and Harriet) and the very solemn Hugh Prentice (who please, please, PLEASE finds love with a Smythe-Smith in a future installment), the book was almost perfection.

A last side note, JQ knows how to end a book. Very, very well. One of the only romance writers off the top of my head that I can read and be truly fulfilled when the last page is flipped. Bravo dear Julia! Keep those words flowing!!
