An interesting approach to a subject that's been well covered by historians. The characters appearing in the book are not the usual group of famous generals, but those who played minor roles.

More was going on in the run-up to the American Civil War than events in and around South Carolina or Washington. It was enjoyable to read about the less significant who played small roles, but had a definite impact on what the average citizen thought and felt about slavery and the meaning of the United States.

In general, the content added to an understanding by filling in gaps that are not covered in books about battles and maneuvers.

The last fifty pages, however, became quite dull and I skimmed through to the end.
