This material has all been dealt with numerous times, and if I lived in the East, it would be in my beach bag. A family wedding held on an island similar to Martha's Vineyard with characters who don't seem to be existing in this world (unabashedly affluent, these people are curiously unaffected by any current financial affairs at all). But since it is not a genre I usually choose, i.e. chick lit, maybe mundane details are never present so this is not unusual. However, I was impressed by the quality of writing and the characterizations. The two central characters are a father and daughter, yes father of the bride, but the bride's sister rather than the bride herself. This tilts the emphasis of the book which is more about self discovery into unexpected territory. Winn, the father, is an amazingly unsympathetic person. Not one I'd want for either a father or a friend. However his good points are nuanced and need to be discovered and appreciated by the reader during the course of the three days covered by this novel. I will read more from this author since I find her take on society to be penetrating and original.
