A good sequel. I found this one a bit funnier than the first for some reason. I still really like the footnotes/asides. Something was bothering me about the storytelling and it finally dawned on me that it was the Wizard of Oz twist - but once I figured it out it actually seemed pretty clever (boy in a strange land with his little dog, wants to get home, helped by four strangers and some dwarfs while battling demons who plot his demise - some of whom even have flying minions - ...not a huge stretch).

While I think a reader could pick up on the plot well I do think one is at a disadvantage reading this if you haven't already read The Gates.

Open ended leaves way for a trilogy (or more?) but I'm torn about whether or not it should happen.
