Dickens takes on historical fiction in this brilliant masterpiece (written some 70 years after the period in which it's set) and to my mind it's nearly flawless. The story centers around various English and French characters whose lives become entangled by the upheavals of the French Revolution. Dickens creates some of the most passionate and poignant moments of his career, and his prose and pacing are impeccable. There's plenty of romance, deceit, treachery and suspense to go around, and it all comes together beautifully in the tragically heroic ending. In my opinion, this novel epitomizes what great literature should be.
