it was ok

I learned that I really don't like gratuitous gore (I sorta knew that already). I was looking for a 2008 horror novel sans vampires/werewolves. Hayder is technically a thriller writer, but since this one has voodoo in it, I thought maybe it would be horror. It is scary, I'll give you that, along the lines of Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, but not as good. She's got some great creepy scenes in which severed hands are found, or a victim waits to be cut up, knowing what's coming. But all in all I wasn't impressed. It's a typical suspense mystery in which the sleuth has some serious emotional problems and a passing knowledge of the creepy guys' brand of voodoo-like witchery.
