Despite the glowing recommendation of my local bookseller and despite my respect for the author's voice and wordcraft, I found myself "pushing" to finish this book. Perhaps I read it at a time when I had a lot of distractions going on; perhaps, as a guy, I'm not quite able to identify with the narrator's situation(?); perhaps I wasn't in the right time and place to savor Gardam's complex, understated British voice. Whatever it is, I feel as if I SHOULD have loved this book, yet I ended up appreciating it in that way one appreciates a novel they read in English class. Perhaps I need to revisit it when I am more relaxed...
