Discovery, depositions, and other trial prep are fundamentally boring. I avoided litigation in law school as much as possible because it's boring. Even when your rookie lawyer protagonist makes marvellous finds and produces stunning evidence, it's still boring, John Grisham, especially when it goes on and on, and isn't even slightly believable.

Also, first person present tense is an exhausting read for a novel. It doesn't help that Rudy is frequently unlikable, so being rightthere inhishead is, like, ugh. Also, John Grisham, if you choose first person then you lose the ability to constantly know exactly what everyone else is thinking and why they're reacting. Your protagonist ends up looking like a self-congratulatory, delusional, dick.

Two stars because it did have some really good parts and characters, but overall was just so tedious and despite the win, unfinished and unsatisfying at the end.

06/26/2012 "I "watched" the movie on the plane yesterday - no sound and frequently tending to the kids - and was sufficiently interested to buy the book to see what actually happens (you mean it's not just about cute baby!Matt Damon and Claire Danes? )"

Carole Well, now that you've read this, you don't have to read any more Grisham books because they're all the same!
