Cute book. Basically, Delilah is lonely and loves reading a fairy tale book that she identifies with. The prince in this book feels trapped and manages to get Delilah to notice him- the first reader who ever has. All the characters have a personality outside the official plot, but everyone except the prince is content. Delilah promises to get him out of the book and into the real world, where he can have free will. They work together to try to find a way to help him escape the book he lives in. Lots of fun, light-hearted adventure ensues.
Despite the lack of original concept (characters in books are real people and want to get out! oh my!), it's a very fun read and would be a great book to read aloud to a kid. Totally the same plot as The Great Good Thing, which I read a long time ago (and highly recommend) although the style is more youthful and straightforward, whereas TGGT went into this weird segment where the characters lived in some kind of trippy mind-world in a girl's brain, where they had to act out her dreams like a play. Between the Lines doesn't have any strange plot twists, but is more of a straightforward magical/realism romance where the happiest ending is one that actually has an "after."
