I first read this book in 2008 but have visited it again with my library book club. This is a a good story about family (whether biological or adopted). It struck a chord with me for the challenges of raising black children in a white family but there is obviously such devotion between the members of this family that race becomes a non-issue. Whether that makes the story too facile - that's a matter for debate. Loved the fact that the whole story takes place in a 24 hour time period. The detail is presented well. Felt so sorry for the little girl but she is shown as mature beyond her years - again this is a plot point that could be debated along with how easily this family allowed her and her mother (in a way) into their lives. Actually could have lived without the wrap up chapter as it tied everything together a little too neatly. My favorite chapter was Tennessee's visit from her "ghost" friend - and yet that chapter was probably the most out of sync with the rest of the story.
