I didn't realize when I picked this up that it was intentionally fictionalized. I have nothing against historical fiction, but this just wasn't what I was really looking for at the moment.

Nevertheless, I did enjoy reading it. I wondered, as with all historical fiction when I don't know the history, just how much is generally believed to be true and how much is the author's invention. I thought the description of what happened in Siddhartha/Gautama/Buddha's life and the interactions among the characters were the strong points of the book. When it came to explaining more mystical aspects -- for example, just exactly what was it that happened when Buddha achieved enlightenment? -- I found it weaker. The explanations didn't really clear up anything for me that I hadn't understood before.

The book concludes with an Epilogue and a short "Practical Guide to Buddhism." I appreciated these, but again found them a bit confusing and therefore frustrating.
