Honestly, this was a good book. Typical for a Scalzi novel, and easy to read. I was loving it, quite a lot, up until I reached the second to last chapter. That's where everything fell apart for me, where the entire novel just... broke.
It was a revelation so bad that it completely kicked me out of the story, made me realize that it was nothing but a story, that all of the words were just words on paper. I like to be immersed in my books, to forget that these are just mere books, but this one with out of its way to remind you that that was all it was. I think that was bad writing, and that the book honestly should have ended with the main character's talk with his superior.
Reading the three codas, the first did nothing to re-immerse me back into the story. The second two were better that way, helped me to forget the revelation in the second to last chapter, helped me to believe in the story again.
I liked the book, but... no book should throw you out of the story like this one did.
