The first part of the book didn't pick up the pace as quickly as the others. Book three ended in a way that felt very much like a cliffhanger, yet there is no follow up to that storyline. Too much time was spent in the real world. But once the children made it to the quarry of the dwarves, things turned around wonderfully. Again the descriptions were magnificent. The ironwood tree. Another thing I liked very much was the expansion of the dwarve's handiwork as metalsmiths to include intricate toys. I can't imagine these not dazzling the imagination of a child. Wind up birds and silver peacocks adorned with jade. Metal dogs that want nothing more than to play catch. The stage doesn't feel as set as it should for the final book in the series. I fear many loose ends will remain untied. Which, given the focus to storyline in the first three books, is a bit surprising.
