** spoiler alert ** This felt like reading one of those hidden object/adventure games, where you search for things in rooms, avoid stuff, have to back over some scenes. I couldn't stand the main characters. Tish Everett has recently left a bad marriage with a husband who is too controlling. So instead, she ends up with the patronizing Criminy who calls her "little pet," and says things like "don't sulk, precious" and "don't fret, little love." Shades of Barbara Cartland! As much as the author tries to get her to seem strong, Tish really just wants to be taken care of and treated like a child. There are clockwork characters and odd machinery, the workings of which are never explained except for the wind-up car. There's magic, but no explanations around it. And the most annoying part is that the citizenry is huddled in cities, yet the countryside is filled with vampire, oh, wait, "blud" people and critters. After Criminy and his ex feast on a zoo, you have to think - there really isn't enough blood-filled creatures running around for this "blud" population to still be alive. Bluck.
