Holt, Colorado is the setting of small town life in the heartlands. Ike and Bobby Guthrie are brothers who go through changes in their life. Their mother is in depression and leaves home and their father is a schoolteacher who is wrapped up in his own life so the boys seek love in different ways. Victoria Roubideax is seventeen years old and is pregnant with no place to go because her mother put her out of the house. An unlikely extended family is formed when a high school teacher helps Victoria make a home with the McPheron brothers who are elderly bachelor ranchers.

This was the best book discussion I have ever had. Some didn’t care for the language and sex scenarios in this story, but all agreed that it was a very controversial book and realized that the author had a special place for the characters. Each character in the book played a significant role in the story giving the discussion group a lot to talk about.
