Those who enjoy fairy tales and their retellings will like this more modern day version of Snow White. It's set in the 1940s in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. When Snow in Summer is 11, her father remarries a witch. At first, Snow in Summer tries her best to get along with Stepmama. It take awhile before she realizes how evil her Stepmama. This Snow White is neither brilliant nor as dimless as the original Brothers Grimm one. Instead, she is just a plain, average girl who through the grace of God, a bit of luck or magic is able to survive the witch. (Readers will not be sure which as author Jane Yolen weaves elements of all 3 into this story.)
