This was the first book I read in the Outlander series and therefore my favorite. It is a romance novel but the author meticulously details the history and science of the period. All the books are intelligently written and make good drama as well as romance. I recommend reading the books in order, starting with “Outlander” since they are a continuing story of a women traveling back in time. The plot sounds far fetched but it is handled with acumen so it works. I loved the first two books, the third was okay but after that the books became just too long and I got bored reading detailed events on a day-to-day basis.

Not only did I find the historically accurate details a welcome relief for a “period romance novel”, I loved Gabaldon’s portrayal of the main characters’ relationship.
