"Hattie Big Sky" is based on a true story of the author's great-grandmother. Hattie is left her Uncle Chester's claim in Montana after he dies. At 16, she leaves Iowa and becomes a homesteader - having absolutely no clue what she is getting into with the hard life in Montana.

I enjoyed learning more about early Montana settlers, as well as the way World War I affected them. Hattie is a strong character and reading about her struggles and accomplishments is empowering to any woman.
