Circa July 2006 at the end of an after work stroll though the late day peace of Central Park I found myself rammed into a crowd of strolling Tourists, rushing businesspeople, taxis, pedicabs, horse-drawn carriages (all with Tourists in them), street artists (all who were accosting the Tourists) and a few pigeons.

Seeking refuge I slunk over to The Strand Book Annex and found myself holding a paperback copy of "Far from the Madding Crowd," by Thomas Hardy. Given my frazzled state of mind, I had actually misread the title as "Far from the Maddening Crowd." Small wonder.

The first sentence describes one of the main characters, Farmer Gabriel Oak, with the detail and precision of a Baroque sitting room, yet it was not overdone as many Baroque sitting rooms are; every word was perfectly picked, every event described rather than told. Hardy describes mostly simple, everyday things and though his descriptions the reader uncovers their importance and beauty.

Nophoto-f-25x33 If you like Hardy, you should read Return of the Native. It'll make you want to go live on Egdon Heath and cut furtz for a living.
