Four stars. It's a really good four stars.
Scalzi brings a writing style that goes down easy and with a good aftertaste. This scifi novel offers a great world, one that raises interesting questions and situations. I really really like the "voice" of the main character--he's great. I liked him from the first sentence. The plot moves along quickly and I found myself swallowing the story rapidly.

My only criticism is that Scalzi skipped the opportunity to dig deep into the great questions raised by his story. And that's ok.....he doesn't have to be that guy. But this is a rich world and I hope someone digs in to explore the questions about aging, war, and human character. Perhaps it's God's mercy that keeps us away from exploring other worlds.

Meanwhile, I look forward to book two ...
